Inspiration

When it’s summer in Provence, cicadas are everywhere — their constant song becoming the unmistakable soundtrack of long, sun-soaked days. Celebrated as a symbol of the region, they embody everything that feels unique about Provence: heat, light, and a slower rhythm of life.

This painting is inspired by a small ceramic cicada I fell in love with at a local market when I was 13 and brought home as a souvenir. Time-worn and well travelled, it has followed me through countless house moves over the years. Each time I see it, it instantly transports me back to that family summer holiday, filled with warmth, joy, and some of my happiest memories of Provence.
